WASHINGTON- The U.S. military today reported that 33 civilians were killed in an air raid back on Aug. 22. This is a different account from the first time this was reported to the public. The original total was five to seven civilians. Even though the military admitted regret about the deaths, most of the blame was hurled at the Taliban because they hid in an civilian area.
U.S. Central Command spokesman Rear Adm. Greg Smith said the matter is considered closed and no disciplinary action is contemplated against anyone involved, in light of the investigation's conclusion that due diligence was exercised and there was no violation of the laws of war.
The problem I have with this is instead of admitting blame and saying air raids are killing more civilians than they are insurgents. Yet we continue to wonder why they hate us and want us dead. Imagine if you were sleeping and you were awakened by an explosion, only to find you son or daughter lying dead in their bed, and the only thing the government could tell you is sorry but it's the other guy's fault.
